The Great City of Omashu

Book 1 Episode 5: The King of Omashu

Off in the distance, Aang and friends see the great city of Omashu. It is unlike any water tribe city, in its size and construction. Katara recommends that Aang wear a disguise, so they can travel without anyone knowing they are with the Avatar. After a bit of haggling with the guards, the group enters Omashu. It is a sight to behold. The city is complete with a delivery system that extends for miles and miles.

Riding the delivery system

A young earthbender from Omashu, who is a little bit “interesting”, showed Aang how to use the delivery system as a sled when they were both young. Aang shows a terrified Katara and Sokka how much fun it is to ride around on one of the delivery system carts. After being a nuisance around the city while riding their delivery cart, Aang, Katara, and Sokka find them at King Bumi’s chambers. King Bumi orders his guards to throw them a feast!

Bumi makes some awesomely bad jokes while everyone is eating. Bumi surprises the Avatar when he throws a chicken leg at him. Aang has to use his airbending to stop the chicken leg. Realizing that Aang is the Avatar, Bumi requires Aang to face three challenges before letting him leave. After trying to escape their cell for a bit, Aang, Sokka, and Katara go to sleep. Aang wakes up to find that Katara and Sokka are missing.

Bumi’s Challenges

Aang is led to Bumi, where he also finds Katara and Sokka. Katara and Sokka are given rings, which are growing crystal. The crystal is a special creeping crystal, which will engulf them by the end of the day. Bumi agrees to let them go if Aang finishes his three challenges.

The first challenge is to get Bumi’s key to his lunchbox. The key is suspended in the middle of the room, underneath a waterfall. The room is full of spikes on the ceiling and floor as well.

The second challenge is to bring Bumi his rabbit, Flopsy. Aang quickly finds what he thinks is Flopsy. All of a sudden, a huge beast emerges and chases Aang. After running for a bit, Aang notices that the beast chasing him has huge floppy ears. He faces the beast, and as the beast is about to crush him, it licks him instead. The huge beast was actually Flopsy!

The third challenge is a fight with Bumi, or one of Bumi’s henchmen. Bumi appears to be a weak frail old man, but when Aang chooses him, he soon realizes he made the wrong choice. Bumi is one of the best Earthbenders in the world. Bumi and Aang engage in a battle. Bumi appears to have the edge; his greatskill as an earthbender is apparent. Aang realizes that he must use Bumi’s attacks against him. He whips up a tornado, and hurls Bumi’s huge boulder back at him. Bumi dodges the strike, but Aang is quick to follow up. He gets Bumi to concede a job well done. He makes him do one more challenge; Aang must figure out who he is.

The entire time that the group was at the castle, they had no idea that the King was Bumi! After figuring it out, Bumi explains that the Avatar needed an open mind, and that the challenges were meant to help him open his mind.

As a last bit of fun before leaving, Aang and Bumi ride the delivery system one last time.
