Book 1 Episode 4 – The Warriors of Kyoshi

Zuko is meditating in front of some candles. Uncle Iroh enters the room, and inquires about what Zuko is doing. Zuko explains that he is trying to maintain an even keal. Zuko asks for an update on the whereabouts of the Avatar. Uncle Iroh replies that he has ‘no idea’, and Zuko yells “WHAT!?”, while angrily firebending. He has a lot to learn apparently! Zuko calms down and has a look at a map with his Uncle. Zuko thinks out loud, ‘the Avatar is a master of evasive maneuvering’.

Aang, Katara, Sokka and Momo flying with Appa

We join the Avatar gang while they are looking at a map. Sokka exclaims that they have no idea where they are going. Katara is sewing, and not paying attention to Aang. Sokka tells Aang that ladies need their space while sewing.

The crew stops in a lakeside area. Katara and Sokka are curious, because they think they should travel a while longer. It turns out they stopped there for Elephant Coy. Aang hops in the water to show Katara and Sokka how it’s done. He rides a giant Elephant Coy, while he shows off for Katara. Sokka notices suddenly that there is something in the water. It snatches Aang’s Elephant Coy from underneath him, and Aang flies headfirst into the water. He uses his airbending to run on top of the water, and away from the monster.

As they all are leaving, they are ambushed by some mysterious women. The Warriors of Kyoshi.

The Warriors of Kyoshi

The Avatar gang finds themselves tied to a pole, surrounded by warriors. Aang explains that they are just there to see the Elephant Coy, and that he is the Avatar. It takes a little bit of convincing, but Aang explains that he knows Kyoshi. The villagers are excited to hear tha the Avatar landed on Kyoshi. Word spreads quickly, and Zuko and Iroh find out about the Avatar’s whereabouts. Zuko decides to head to Kyoshi.

Meanwhile, the Aang and Katara enjoy breakfast in Kyoshi (dessert for breakfast!). Sokka is disappointed about being beat up by the Warriors of Kyoshi; ‘just a bunch of girls’. Aang turns out to be irresistible to Kyoshi womenfolk. They follow him everywhere, and it starts to go to his head.

Sokka walks in on a Kyoshi Warrior training session. As he tells the ladies about how great of a warrior he is, they encourage him. They tell him to show them his best stuff. Sokka tries to fight the lead warrior, Suki, and she quickly and easily bounds him and knocks him to the ground. A little while later, Sokka swallows his pride, and asks Suki to teach him the way of the Kyoshi Warrior. She makes him dress up in a womens warrior uniform, but also agrees to teach him.

the-unagi

Aang rides this beast, the Unagi, to try and impress the ladies.

Aang thinks Katara is jealous about all the attention that he is getting. She thinks all his popularity has gone to his head. Aang tries to show off for Katara, by riding the beast that almost ate him while he was riding the Elephant Coy; the Unagi. Aang is waiting for the Unagi, and all his fangirls are watching. After a while, the fangirls are tired of waiting. They leave, and Katara arrives. Aang and Katara “make up”, and Aang swims towards the shore. Unfortunately, on his way in to shore, the Unagi strikes. Aang is able to hang on to the beasts whisker, but he is thrown up in the air and crashes down into the water. Katara is able to save him. More trouble, however, is moments away. Just as they are getting back onto shore, Zuko’s ship pulls up to shore.

A brief battle with Zuko

The Warriors of Kyoshi are alerted that firebenders have landed on the island. They position themselves for an assault. As Zuko and his soldiers ride through the village, they are ambushed by the Warriors of Kyoshi and Sokka. As Zuko throws several Kyoshi warriors to the side, Aang arrives. Aang engages Zuko in a brief battle, and is able to incapacitate him for a bit. He looks around and sees all of the damage done to the city, and thinks its his fault. The group decides to leave the city. As they are flying away on Appa, Aang jumps into the body of water where the Unagi roams. As the Unagi tries to eat Aang, Aang jumps on its head and commandeers it. He directs the Unagi towards the village, and makes it spit water, dousing the flames set by Zuko and the Fire Nation. When Aang returns to Appa and the group, Katara gives him a warm hug.
